Stop Automatic Tablet Mode on Windows 10

To get started you need to open the Settings app. Click or tap the Start button and click on Settings from the left panel. Or, for the keyboard warriors out there simply use the Windows Key + I key combo.

When the Settings app opens up select System from the menu.

From the System section of the Settings app tap Tablet from the menu in the left panel. Now in the right section click the dropdown menu under “When I use this device as a tablet.”

There you have three options: Don’t switch to tablet mode. This will keep your PC in desktop mode when disconnecting the keyboard. Ask me before switching modes. Pops up a message asking if you want to switch to Tablet Mode when disconnecting the keyboard. Always switch to tablet mode. This will always switch your device into Tablet Mode when you disconnect the keyboard from the tablet portion. Select the option that works best for you. In fact, you might want to experiment with until you find the option that works best for you during your workflow. Starting with Windows 10 20H2 October 2020 Update it switches automatically without asking. So if you have updated, making the change to having it always ask you might be one of the first things you change.
